WARNING! That May Be Asbestos!
The Potential Health Risks of Renovating Homes in Sacramento
Right now in Sacramento real estate, many people are buying foreclosed homes, renovating them and either moving in or renting them out. The renovation of some of these homes could pose potential health risks for property owners especially if the home was constructed prior to 1980 and not previously renovated.
Recently, Chase Peterson from Asbestos.com contacted me to ask if I would post an article on my site warning people about the potential health risks associated with being exposed to asbestos that may not even be detected. As I feel this is an important issue and thought my readers could benefit from the information, here’s an article by Chase Peterson of Abestos.com.
Asbestos May Be Where You Least Expect It
There are many things to consider when purchasing and remodeling older homes in Sacramento. Homes built prior to 1980 may have a asbestos hazards that are not obvious. It is important to make sure the location has been tested for asbestos levels and any asbestos discovered be removed by abatement contractors. Exposure to asbestos fibers can pose serious health risks for you, your family and friends.
One Of The Most Common Health Hazards
Asbestos has been used in millions of homes throughout the U.S. Asbestos insulation is common and can be a big problem for homeowners because of its corrosive and health deteriorating qualities. Cancer’s such as Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Malignant Mesothelioma are obtained through exposure to asbestos and take the lives of thousands each year.
Testing And Removal
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the federal agency that regulated asbestos testing, has set very specific guidelines on how to conduct asbestos containment and removal once it’s discovered. If asbestos has been discovered, it’s the responsibility of the property owner to warn tenants and take action to remove the asbestos from the premises.
In residential homes, non-regulated asbestos material can be legally removed by homeowners, regular contractors, or licensed asbestos abatement contractors as long as the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) are followed. Asbestos removal in public facilities and workplaces must be undertaken by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor. One the removal is complete, green insulation options should be given serious consideration, such as: Cellulose, Cotton Fiber and Lcynene.
Nothing Is More Important Than Your Health
Exposure to asbestos is not a good thing. Once it’s discovered, and it’s where you least expect it, do what you need to do to remove it. It’s for the good of your health and the health of others.
