California’s Proposition 8
I’ve been resisting writing an article about this subject as I generally feel that politics and religion should be kept between one’s own 4 walls. I think Thomas Jefferson said something to that effect and I agree completely.
However, I’m compelled to comment on this as I believe that the people who are in support of passing Prop. 8 with a yes vote are grossly wrong. The ads that I’ve heard in support openly discriminate against a segment of the population. Discrimination against anyone for race, creed, sexual preference, religious preference or whatever is wrong. Period. (in my opinion)
The ads show a couple saying that gay marriage was taught in their kids school or something like that. If this measure passes, it will be taught in political history that this passed in the State of California and what a battle between good and evil it was. If it doesn’t pass, it will be taught in schools as a triumph of good over evil for those standing against discrimination, in favor of tolerance. Either way, this proposition and what it represents will be taught in schools.
My son will hear about this from me as it isn’t the responsibility of his school to teach him the values that will get him along successfully in life. That’s our job not the schools job.
Discrimination against anyone is discrimination against everyone. When discrimination happens, no one wins.
Let’s assume for a moment that this proposition fails and gay marriage is allowed under the State of California constitutional law. Will this turn someone who isn’t gay toward marrying someone of the same sex? I’m a personal example of that not being the case. My father was gay, I’m am not. My father had a “partner” until he passed. They weren’t married but he was happy. While his lifestyle wasn’t in any way,
shape or form something I could understand, I respected his right to be who he was. Never once did I think about marrying a man or being involved with a man in a romantic manner.
Being gay isn’t something that’s chosen. It just is. For me, it best to teach my children tolerance of the differences between all people and that discrimination is wrong in all forms. This proposition promotes bigotry and hatred. The demonstrations have been deplorable. Aren’t we more evolved than this? Don’t we have more important issues that we have to deal with than this?
It doesn’t affect me in any way if gay marriage is allowed. I’m not threatened by it at all for any reason. To me, it just doesn’t matter. My marriage doesn’t mean less if it passes. THERE IS NO NET EFFECT, to me, IF GAY MARRIAGE IS ALLOWED.
This proposition is about fear. People who oppose gay marriage are afraid. That is how it’s portrayed in the media. When you fear something, like Job 3:25, it comes toward you.
“For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, and that which I am afraid of cometh unto me..”
The fact is that gay marriage has been going on since the dawn of time. Nothing can be done to prevent it. Love will happen with or without mandates on our behavior either by a state or religion.
Jesus said to love thy neighbor and pray for those who pursecute you. What was good enough for him is good enough for me. Passing this proposition flies in the face of what He stood for.
Voting yes on 8 doesn’t protect marriage. Voting no on 8 doesn’t invalidate traditional marriage. Gay marriage will be taught in schools regardless of what happens. Your children will hear about it. There isn’t a thing that can prevent this. (unless of course you lock them in the basement for the rest of their lives)
What’s right is to not discriminate against anyone for any reason. Until we can rise above discrimination, what other issues do we have?
